Sorry to interrupt your scroll, but here’s an opportunity to stop and smell the Hopkins roses!

Hopkins roses (Okenia rosacea) nudibranch sea slugs are brightly blushing due to their equally rosy bryozoan prey Integripelta bilabiata. The color comes from a pigment known as hopkinsiaxanthin, which signals to the world that—no matter how beautiful—this distasteful nudibranch is a rose that has its (icky) thorns. (For scale, this slug is about 1in/3cm long)

Two common questions about starting a saltwater aquarium

The two most common questions I get about starting a saltwater aquarium are: Isn’t it a lot of work? Aren’t they expensive? I tend to get these questions when someone first sees my tank–or finds out I’m a big fish nerd. Do you get the same questions? What do you …

Reef A Palooza Orlando 2021 – Introducing NPS Reefer, Levi Peterson

All good things must come to an end and unfortunately this is the last video of Reef A Palooza Orlando 2021! For this video, I ran into a young YouTube personality, Levi Peterson, at the Reef Nutrition booth. If you think that he has a baby face, you are correct. Levi just graduated from high school but don’t let his age fool you. He’s become quite the expert in the highly beautiful but underrated and mostly uncharted world of NPS reef tanks, and that has been gathering attention from all over the industry such as Reef Builders, ACI, Julian Sprung, and Reef Hobbyists' Magazine to name a few. I wanted to get together with him, and introduce you guys to him and his channel so you could see the beauty of the NPS corals as well as to help him ease in to the industry. Hopefully we can help to influence and nurture this young talent as a recognized figure for years to come as an NPS expert that we all can rely on! Check out our sit-down interview and comment below about your experience with NPS corals and tell us about your favorites. Happy Reefing!

You made it through another week, give yourself a pat on the back—just like this bat star encouraging a tiny chocolate drizzle flatworm along its two-dimensional voyage off the back deck of the Aquarium.

(For scale, this Eurylepta californica flatworm is about an inch long)

First Look at Reef Labs

For this video, I was invited by my good friend Chris Meckley of ACI to travel to Bradenton and Plant City, Florida to check out the brand new ICP lab. He had been talking to me about this for a while now and each time my expectations got higher and higher. (Chris has that effect) Being in Florida, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to learn about them and how the unit works when it became available for me to look at it. I sat down with Chris and Gene Diveglia, who is an actual physicist turned reef geek, to briefly learn about this water lab and what they have to offer. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments below. More in-depth facility video will be coming soon.
